Shooting Second

Wedding photography can be a challenge. There are things that have the potential to create high stress situations. Problems are always popping up, and it's our job to solve them. That is the draw for me. I love the constant change and newness that a wedding brings. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out, there is always something to learn, and a new way to approach a problem and solve it. One of the best ways to do this is to second shoot with a successful wedding photog. When you get this opportunity, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

1. You are there to support and carry out the vision of the primary photographer. Make sure you listen to her or him about what to shoot. You may have ideas of how to pose, light, and direct, but you need to put your leadership skills aside and serve.

2. Stay out of the way. Get out of the primary photographers way. Again, your job is to support and shoot whatever you're directed to shoot. If you get on with a good photographer, they will know you're there to learn and help, and in turn they will help you out as well. Often they will let you in on the main shots. If you're just starting out, you have the opportunity to come out with some great portfolio pieces. So be on your toes.

3. Don't relax just because you're the second shooter. Stay attentive and on your toes. You may come out with a shot that the primary photog wasn't able to get, but may need. It's a great feeling when you get the shot that no else could. Also, this will help with networking. If you can save your primary with a shot, you build trust and the primary may have you back, or better yet refer you to other clients.

4. Do learn as much as you can. Be a sponge. You're there to help, but you also want to see how other successful photogs work. Success always leaves clues. Make sure you're picking up on them.

5. Do have fun. Weddings are amazing. It's one of the greatest celebrations you can attend.
